86 | What is the fourth commandment? | The fourth commandment is, Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God; in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath Day, and hallowed it. |
87 | What does the fourth commandment teach us? | To keep the Sabbath holy. |
The fourth of God’s commandments requires us to recall
A pattern in creation decreed before the Fall;
My daily work and labour must on the Lord’s Day cease
For God that Day did hallow and adorn with peace.
By honouring the Lord’s Day, observing Sabbath rest
God’s noblest saints through history have patently been blessed;
Wherefore, our sons and daughters and all within our home
Will weekly join in worship before God’s throne.
