Psalter manuscript

Psalm 4: Hear my anxious calling

Hear my anxious calling
God, my righteousness;
Pardon my offences,
Heal my soul’s distress.

Why do my companions,
Glory in their shame?
Loving what is worthless,
Seeking evil gain.

Know that He who’s holy
For Himself has called
Those whose lives are godly
To be gathered gold.

In your consternation
Let no sin abide,
Think, while you are sleeping,
Of the Lord, your guide.

Trust in Him completely,
Turn to Him in prayer;
He alone will keep you
Free from needless care.

I am often hearing
‘Life is full of gloom’;
Shine on us Your brightness
Overturn our doom.

You’ve supplied my gladness
More than seasoned wine,
Safe and peaceful sleeping
Therefore shall be mine.
