Psalter manuscript

Psalm 44: Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord?

Resources

Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord,
Why do You hide Your face?
The saints of Your inheritance
Are crushed beneath disgrace!
Their soul lies helpless on the ground
With cruel oppressors all around.

The patriarchs of old beheld
The power of Your hand
Displayed in mighty providence
When capturing the land
Their solemn words to these our ears
Confront our sinful shame and fears.

O God of Jacob’s faithful sons
Command Your victories;
Invoking Jesus’ mighty Name
We’ll crush our enemies;
This confidence we bear is not our own
But flows from Jesus Christ alone.

But You have cast us off!  Behold today our shame;
Your Church is a reproach, by all around we’re blamed!
We’ve not forsaken You, we love Your covenant;
Our heart has not turned back; we love what You command!
Had we forgotten You or empty idols owned
Our God would this reveal and we would be condemned!

Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord,
Why do You hide Your face?
The saints of Your inheritance
Are crushed beneath disgrace!
Their soul lies helpless on the ground
With cruel oppressors all around.

O God of Jacob’s faithful sons
Command our victories;
According to Your promises,
Defeat our enemies;
This confidence which we possess
Springs from Christ’s Name and righteousness.
