Proverbs 7 > The Crafty Harlot

Resources

As I stood behind the curtains at my window
I perceived the youthful features of a fool
Stepping out from his companions ‘neath the shadows,
With a countenance most careless yet so cool;
Passing by familiar paths he paused to ponder
‘Who would know if here I turn and rest a while?’
There, pursuing where his heart had begun to wander,
He was greeted with a most seductive smile.

Having snared him in the street where he’d been trading
The enticement of her charm him overcame,
He suggested an appointment at her bidding
Being careful not to advertise his name;
Having impudently sneered she caught and kissed him
Saying, ‘promises and peace this day I’ve sworn,
Come behold my pleasant tapestries and linen
Sweetly scented with pure myrrh and cinnamon’.

O beware that crafty harlot
Whose feet stray far away from home;
She will drag you down to Hell all dressed in scarlet
Where her slain – all mighty men – lie dead as stone!

‘Let us take our fill of love until the morning
I am here alone where no one hears or sees;
We can answer to ourselves’, she said while teasing,
‘There is none but you and me we need to please’.
As an empty headed ox sent to the slaughter,
He succumbed to sin’s temptation speedily –
Thus an arrow struck him down, piercing his liver,
Laying bare before God’s throne dark secrecy!

O beware that crafty harlot
Whose feet stray far away from home;
She will drag you down to Hell all dressed in scarlet
Where her slain – all mighty men – lie dead as stone!

Wherefore listen up and learn from this encounter
Pay good heed to what you hear and from it learn
Turn aside from godless paths; don’t stray or wander
Lest the flames of hottest Hell your body burn!
As a Christian you have pledged to heart to Jesus
Are you subject to His precepts in your mind?
We are nothing more than infidels and scoundrels
If His Law condemns the ‘good’ that we define.
