A Voice Crying in the Wilderness (Mark 1)

The Spirit of the Lord through men of old
Perceived that in the fullness of Earth’s time
The kingdom of the living God
Would dawn upon the ground they trod
Transforming humble water into wine.

The prophet John the Baptist strangely dressed
In the spirit of Elijah heaven sent;
With earnestness they heard him say,
‘Lay bare your hearts; prepare the way
Confess your sins, before the Lord, repent!’

Do you hear his solemn plea?
Will you this hour turn away
From the wayward machinations of your mind?
Listen up! O can’t you see
Black and white to you’ve been grey
And the eyes God gave you’ve wilfully been blind!

Still I hear their warnings echo through the air
Arresting all who listen to their heart;
But a countless multitude I see
Who refuse to yield or bend the knee
Disdaining heaven’s call to be set apart.

Who is Lord within the confines of your house?
Are you lawless when you think you’re all alone?
Are you captive to the Word of truth
Or a slave to wicked lusts of youth
Unaware your heart’s much harder than a stone?

Do you hear God’s solemn plea?
Will you this hour turn away
From the wayward machinations of your mind?
Listen up! O can’t you see
Black and white to you’ve been grey
And the eyes God gave you’ve wilfully been blind!

Are you pleading for the fire from heav’n to fall?
Are you troubled by the godless all around?
Do you daily pray, ‘Thy kingdom come,
Let the world be subject to the Son
Till the light we lost in Eden here be found’?
