Isaiah 26 – There’s a City Strong Appointed for Salvation

Resources

There’s a city strong appointed for salvation
Open wide her gates and let that nation in
That upholds the truth and legislates by wisdom
And by the Law of God identifies sin.

In the way of perfect peace and soul-surrender
You will keep that man who wholly trusts in You
Who by faith anticipates earth’s holy splendour
And delights in what You do!
Acknowledging what You’ve commanded,
Striving for justice and perfect equity,
All your faithful saints, being pure and holy-minded,
Demonstrate to all the way they should be,

‘Hallelujah,’ let us in Him, stand up and sing, ‘Jesus is king, hallelujah!
[May Your kingdom, Jesus, come]
Hallelujah’, let us all sing, ‘Jesus is king, hallelujah!’
[May, in Christ, the world be one!]

May the wicked be devoured, their strongholds plundered
May the feet of all the needy tread them down,
Who refuse to recognise in gifts they’ve squandered
Loving-kindness of God’s kingdom and crown,

Other masters have beguiled us, gracious Father,
Foreign idols have enticed us in their hold;
They will disappear and vanish as a vapour,
Nevermore to be recalled!
As a girl in travail cries in anguish,
We’ve suppressed Your summons and calling from on high,
Stony-hearted we preferred in sin to languish,
Till the love of Christ illumined our eye.

From the sleep of death, with tearful eyes still twinkling
Resurrected we will dance about and sing;
Let the earth disclose the faithful she’s been keeping
To behold her sovereign Saviour and King!
