Isaiah 28 – To the Crown of Pride in Ephraim…

To the crown of pride in Ephraim come these solemn words of woe:
‘Fading is your beauty, soon it will go!’
Like the first fruits in the spring-time that are swiftly snatched away,
Eaten ‘fore the sunshine brightens the day…
Prey to intoxication, prophet and priest have erred
Given to false persuasion, heedless of God’s word!
All their tables are full of vomit, ‘nought they tell us is clean;
Who will follow their foolish counsel? Suckling infants unweaned!

Line upon line, backwards they fall,
Broken and snared they silence heaven’s call;
Filled up with scorn, smitten with pride
Vainly they seek their lies and falsehoods to hide.

In Jerusalem’s foundation is a precious cornerstone,
Trust in Him completely, make Him your home;
When the storm that He has summoned overwhelms the world He made
Make the Lord your refuge, shelter and shade…
Surely the light is dawning in its appointed place
Listen to truthful teaching, run to win the race;
Not forever will lifeless seedlings barren darken the land,
Wondrous counsel and holy wisdom will triumph just as He planned!

Line upon line, backwards they fall,
[Open our eyes, soften our hearts, let us truth discern…]
Broken and snared they silence heaven’s call;
[Let us as children holy precepts meekly learn…]
Filled up with scorn, smitten with pride
[Wonderful Counsellor, Lord God of hosts make Your people hear…]
Vainly they seek their lies and falsehoods to hide.
[Fill us with holy fruit and filial favour and fear!]
