Summer is past, the harvest too is ended
We sought for peace but trouble only came;
Save us O Lord, great darkness has descended
Save us O Lord, from bitterness and shame.
Why do we sit alone outside the city?
Let us assemble silently within;
The gall of water we must drink in silence
If we at last would comprehend our sin.
Is there no balm in Gilead our country?
Have we no hope of comfort or of peace?
Why is there yet no prospect of recovery?
When will the anguish of our torment cease?
How can we say that we are full of wisdom
While we suppress the precepts of our Lord?
The turtle dove and swallow know God’s summons
Yet we are deaf to holy truth we’ve heard.
Is there no balm in Gilead our country?
Have we no hope of comfort or of peace?
Why is there yet no prospect of recovery?
When will the anguish of our torment cease?
